In 1964, Israeli researcher Dr. Raphael Mechoulam made an important discovery. He identified the primary active compound found in the cannabis plant, which is tetrahydrocannabinol or THC. From there, Dr. Mechoulam and his team discovered the molecules in the human body that bind to cannabinoid receptors. He called one of these the “bliss molecule” because it activates the same CB1 receptor as THC, which produces a state of calm and happiness.

The first molecule he discovered is a type of essential fatty acid that he called anandamide because ananda is the Sanskrit word for bliss. The second molecule he discovered has a less elegant name as it is referred to as 2-arachidonoylglycerol or 2-AG. Together these two bliss molecules help ensure that all of the cells of a particular type or in a specific area of the body or brain are rowing at the right pace and in the right direction. That’s why it’s so important to support this healthy cell-to-cell communication between these bliss molecules and the cannabinoid receptors throughout the body.
